What Happens in a Skin Consultation (and Why Seeing Someone in Person Matters)
Online skin quizzes and apps can be a handy starting point. They ask a few questions, maybe analyse a selfie, and suggest a routine. What they can't do is see your skin in natural light, feel its texture, notice the faint redness around your nose, or ask the follow-up question that changes everything.
An in-person skin consultation fills those gaps. If you've never had one, the idea of sitting down in a clinic can feel a little daunting, so here's exactly what happens, what we'll ask, and how to make sure you're in good hands.
What We Look At During a Skin Analysis
A skin analysis is a close, unhurried look at your skin as it is today. Your nurse will assess your skin type and how oily, dry or dehydrated it is, along with how sensitive or reactive it tends to be. They'll look at pigmentation, redness, texture, pores and any signs of sun damage, paying attention to how these concerns are spread across your face.
Your skin is only half the picture, though. We'll also talk through your current skincare routine and the products you use, because what you put on your skin every day can explain a lot about what we see. And we'll ask about your medical history, any medications and supplements you take, and allergies. Some of these can affect how your skin behaves and which treatments are appropriate, so it's an important part of keeping your care tailored to you.
Questions We'll Ask You
Good advice starts with understanding what you actually want. We'll ask about your goals, whether that's a more even tone, smoother texture or simply a routine that works. We'll talk about your lifestyle too: how much time you spend outdoors, whether you exercise a lot, and how much time you realistically have for skincare.
We'll also ask about any treatments you've had before and how your skin responded, including any reactions. Finally, we'll talk honestly about budget and downtime. There's no point recommending a plan that doesn't fit your life, so this part of the conversation helps us suggest options you'll actually be comfortable with.
Why Some Things Can't Be Judged Online
A photo flattens your skin. Lighting, camera filters and screen settings change how colour and texture appear, and that makes some of the most important judgements unreliable from a distance.
Pigmentation is a good example. Sun spots, freckles and melasma can look similar in a photo, yet they respond very differently to treatment, and some approaches that suit sun spots can make melasma worse. Our guide to telling sun spots, freckles and melasma apart explains why the distinction matters so much.
The same goes for redness and irritation. Telling everyday sensitivity apart from a skin condition that needs a doctor's input is far easier in person. So is checking whether light-based treatments such as laser or BBL are suitable for your skin tone, which depends on factors like recent sun exposure that are hard to judge on a screen. That's also why timing matters, as we explain in Pigmentation Treatment in Summer: Protect Now, Correct Later.
There's a broader shift happening here too. New NSW medicines laws commencing on 5 November 2026 include stronger standards around clinical assessment for cosmetic services.
How to Check Your Practitioner
Whoever you see, it's worth doing a little homework first. In Australia, registered health practitioners, including nurses and doctors, appear on the Ahpra public register. It takes a minute to search by name, and it confirms the person treating you is registered and whether any conditions apply to their practice.
If you're considering laser or IPL, ask about the practitioner's training on that specific device. Australia's radiation safety agency, ARPANSA, recommends checking a provider's training and experience, as these treatments carry risks including burns and pigment changes. It's also reasonable to ask who will actually carry out your treatment, since that may not be the same person you meet at the consultation.
At AESTHETICA HQ, you can meet our nurses before you book and read about their experience.
Questions to Ask at Your Consultation
A good consultation is a two-way conversation, and the best clinicians welcome questions. It's worth having a few ready:
What are the risks and possible side effects of this treatment for my skin?
How many sessions am I likely to need, and how far apart?
What downtime should I expect, and how will my skin look in the days afterwards?
What happens if I have a reaction, and who do I contact?
What are the alternatives, including doing nothing for now?
If you leave without clear answers to these, it's fine to ask again or take more time before you decide.
What Happens Next
At the end of your consultation, we'll talk you through our recommendations and give you a personalised plan in writing, along with a quote, so you can see exactly what's involved. Then the decision is yours.
There's no pressure to book a treatment on the day. Many people like to go home, read over their plan and think it through, and we'd encourage that. If you have more questions later, you're welcome to get in touch.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a skin consultation take?
It depends on your concerns and how many questions you have. We'll let you know how much time to set aside when you book, and we never rush the conversation.
Does a skin consultation cost anything?
At AESTHETICA HQ, consultations are complimentary. It's a chance to understand your skin and your options with no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
Should I come with or without makeup?
Come with clean skin if you can, as it makes the assessment easier and more accurate. If you're coming straight from work, that's fine too. We can provide what you need to remove your makeup when you arrive.
Can I bring my skincare products?
Yes, please do. Bringing your current products, or photos of their labels, helps us understand your routine and spot anything that might be irritating your skin or working against your goals. If you're unsure about your sunscreen, our article on sunscreen recalls in Australia is a useful read beforehand.
